conifersFamily Forest Owners

Over 83 percent of Boundary, Bonner, Kootenai and Benewah counties are forested. Over 878,000 acres (44 percent of all forested land in these counties) is held by over 28,000 family forest owners.

Since 1987, the average timber harvest has been over 167 million board feet annually, with an estimated value of $67 million for mill delivered logs, or $100 million milled.
An annual series of workshops, field days, and other educational activities titled Strengthening Forest Stewardship Skills is designed to strengthen forest owners’ ability to implement practices that improve forest health and growth. Programs are announced in a calendar mailed every fall and on the UI Extension Forestry web site, where PDFs of detailed program flyers are available at least one month prior to each program listed.

Idaho Master Forest StewardIdaho Master Forest Stewards

Idaho Master Forest Stewards complete over 70 hours of training to help them manage their own forests and help forest owners and others learn more about forestry. In return, Idaho Master Forest Stewards provide at least 70 hours of volunteer service over 2 years. They also participate in an active peer learning community with their fellow Master Forest Stewards.

Learn more about the Idaho Master Forest Stewards program on the UI Extension Forestry website.

logging classLogger Education to Advance Professionalism (LEAP)

Over 1,400 Idaho loggers have completed Logger Education to Advance Professionalism (LEAP), an intensive 3-day program on forest ecology, silviculture, and water quality designed to strengthen loggers’ ability to enhance forest water quality and forest growth.

The main LEAP program is offered at least once annually. We also offer LEAP updates for loggers each spring.

Flyers with detailed information on LEAP workshops are typically available every February on the UI Extension Forestry website.
